Why the DNC Has Concealed its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: The Inside Story.

This action from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the release of its internal post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race is shocking yet entirely predictable. Resistant to frank assessments, the DNC behaves more like a publicity machine than an electoral entity focused on cultivating local power for winning elections.

An Environment Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed within that legacy throughout this past year. Making public the findings could have demonstrated whether the leadership actually want to encourage honest conversation regarding the missteps that paved the way for Donald Trump to return to the White House. Yet, the leadership is moving forward under the pretense that there is little to glean from the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from our fundamental goal," a justification which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Could Have Addressed

A genuine analysis of substance would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disengagement: The loss among millions of voters that backed the party's candidate in 2020 proved pivotal in the narrowly decided 2024 election.
  • A Insistence to Run: The unwavering insistence by a party leader to run again, coupled with a very late withdrawal, is seen by some as denying Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort reportedly ceding to corporate donors' interests and not managing to address the role of big business.
  • A Foreign Policy Impact: The failure to shift a stance regarding a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating key demographic groups, particularly with youth voters, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Young Voter Support: Research demonstrates a huge drop-off in support for the party among the youth electorate.

A Record of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a pattern of evading uncomfortable facts. It recalls a dynamic where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington supported a sitting president's decision for running for re-election right up until a poor televised debate led to a reversal.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of the electorate had been continually telling surveyors that they did not want the incumbent to be the nominee.

Financial Concerns

An honest report would also probe matters regarding financial allocations, such as the amounts went to party strategists and advertising contractors during a campaign that managed to spend a colossal amount during the general election.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the blockage regarding the analysis points to a deference to the existing power structure who engineered a losing national race. The message to rank-and-file members – which includes countless loyal volunteers – is that they cannot be trusted to know what the insiders say they discovered based on hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

An organization unable to critically review its mistakes finds it difficult to climb out of the pattern which was so helpful to their opponents.
